Yes, I think that sums it up!

For your reference, this is the code that I am currently using for a similar project; I set my ESP as a client, and have to deal with just one input and one output, but I think it can be a good starting point:

The code you mentioned states SSID and Password ,so the mobile phone cannot be directly connected to the ESP8266 module. It needs a router.
Have you tried without router? like wifi-direct more like P2P.
