Tiny Pico is a nice integrated module and easy to develop with but a bit pricy if you are using lots of them.
Regular ESP-12F modules are 16.0mm wide x 24.0mm long X 3.1mm deep so would fit into a 20mm tube comfortably, but would require more effort to integrate.

But it can't be used for most purposes due to it's very limited amount of pins usable.
I'd go for the ESP12 (as I have been doing for years now).
