Wouldn't it be great if we could use the ESP8266 to build a captive portal?
You would correctly reply me saying that this is very possible, and widely done so already, just google the bloody thing
True. But, mostly for configuring a new device on the local network.
But, I'm not looking for an easy configuration page. Rather, I'd like to have a captive portal the likes they would use at hotels or café's. The kind that give you free internet, perhaps after logging in, or not.
Why? A few reasons. I'd like to provide easy (no pass) and free internet around my house for guests. But I want them to operate on a more restricted firewall (and perhaps limit bandwidth). So, ease of use and security.
I could set up a ESP8266 captive portal. But how to redirect traffic to my router? And wouldn't the bandwidth on the ESP be too restrictive? What if after connecting to the ESP Access Point, the connection could be hand over to the router somehow...... Anyone any idea's???
Note: I'm running an OpenWRT router, so it's quite easy to configure anything special here (still, up to now, I haven't been able to find a good working Captive Portal for it).
Thanks for any input!
