Normally an ESP-01 is programmed using a circuit similar to this:
After connecting it to a computer, applying power and executing the flasher program or development environment, you simultaneously press the flash- and reset-buttons, release the reset button first followed by releasing the flash-button: this will put the ESP in programming mode.
