If you are using a Windows PC, I can give you all the details of how to do this. I agree there is little useful info. and it is not a simple or straightforward process. It doesn't seem to matter what the original firmware is. I do think there should be a simple 'tool' for doing this as it is surely the most common thing users will want to do.

Snag is, while I successfully flashed the 'new' firmware, it doesn't work !

I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate... I've tried everything believe me...I mean everything is available for the common internet user...Somebody should make a tutorial or something to avoid this type of awkward situations...You can post your solution right here because I know I'm not the only one with this problem! Thanks for reply!

Then why don't you use nodemcu-flasher?

#7645 I like the idea of getting a set of massages too! :)

Perhaps I should try issuing a
Code: Select allAT+HAPPY_END

and wait for something to come forth? :D

Seriously, anyone who sold you on the idea that working with ESP8266 is as easy as arduino should hang their head. It is a significant step up in difficulty, but it is 1/10 of the price and about 10x the functionality. If you are struggling with using the command line or installing stuff from github then you should probably expect to have a steep learning experience!!

But it is good that you documented your experience - it will probably help others - so thank you for that - this is why we are all here after all, to learn and to share our learning. I have attached a copy of your document in rtf format so that it is more accessible for people without Word installed.
