Any new findings meanwhile for a cheap battery Power solution? The LD39130SJ33R has nice specs but I cant figure out if it is SMD only.

Why not use an AGM sealed battery? Rather cheap. On ebay you can get 10AH for $20. Probably the best price point, as 1.3AH is $10. Throw some efficient voltage step down. At least this is where I am going. Ok, I am going for a complete solar build. Though, my calculations show that running ESP8266 for 1 min an hour would give you about 1.5 years, unless a battery discharges first.

Yes, this LD39130SJ33R is SMT only.
But there are plenty of other that are SMT too but easier to solder, such XC6203 or HT7333.
