Sorry that I can't replicate your problem ... I tested in station mode, it's fine..

The only difference between us is that my Apple Airport Espress is 7.6.5 .. Maybe you could try to update your router ?

unfortunately I can't get an update to 7.6.5. Airport Utility does not offer one and I also couldn't find a file at support.apple.com. But I realized that there is one difference between your setting and mine. You have set the "radio mode" to "802.11a - 802.11b/g" whilst my "radio mode (Sendermodus)" is set to "802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n (automatisch)". If I set the radio-mode on my Airport Express to "802.11a/n - 802.11b/g" or "802.11a - 802.11b/g" the problem is gone. Please see attached screenshot for the exact setting. So the problem seems to be related to the "automatisch (automatic)" mode or to the 802.11n PHY. I can live with the changed setting as it has no influence on the performance of my AppleTV or SmartTV streaming by now.

ESP8266 can not support 5G .. it can only be 2.4 G..

So you shouldn't select 5G on Apple Airport Espress.

I'm aware of the fact that ESP can only use 2.4 Ghz. But Airport Express is a dual radio AP so it can provide 2.4 and 5 Ghz and it also assigns a different SSID to each frequency. It is not a solution to completely disable 5 Ghz as it has a lot of advantages in e.g. media streaming. But it seems to confuse the ESP if the 802.11n PHY is also available in 5 and 2.4 Ghz in auto mode. Then it stops responding to ping after a few replies. This still seems like a bug to me. It is fine for me to disable the 802.11n PHY on the 5 Ghz band and only use 802.11a there. This seems to work and the 5 Ghz band ist still available for media application.
