I'm up and running now. I fiddled with so many things I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but I didn't need the voltage divider (this FTDI adapter provides 3.3V already, I think), and the firmware on the board was just fine. I did manage to update the firmware anyway, after trying to use AT+CIUPDATE did something weird and resulted in the board just constantly spitting out junk.
