I'm powering an ESP-01 from a power bank like this (but the one with only one battery), with battery inserted. It reaches 4.2v while charging the battery and the ESP01 is still alive.

huh? what kind of single rechargeable battery reaches 4.2v? even 18650, LiFePO4 or lipo won't do that, or do you mean the voltage coming from the usb socket (into the batteries) which should be more like 5v @ 500mA

also my ESP-01's simply won't run at 3.9v when i've tried (3xAA) they will flash ok, but won't run a sketch or connect to wifi. i use a diode to drop to ~3.1v and it works fine, or 2xAA and 3.3v boost converter.

can you really get an ESP-01 and wiring in that space at the back of the charger box, it looks only slightly bigger than the front where the usb socket is filling the space?

#15127 I ordered three of these and they arrived over the weekend.
I think it might be possible to fit an -01 or -12 into either the little area at the end of the box, or by putting only one battery in and using the space left over from the other battery.
But - it will be VERY tight.
Basically there is a lot of horizontal space in the box, but the vertical space is the same as the diameter of a 18650 cell.
I think the only way that's going to work out is by putting the -12 in at a 45 degree angle and wiring directly to the -12 pins. There's no way that I can see that any kind of circuit board is going to be able to fit.

I will try to do some actual measurements later.

OTOH, I put two 18650 cells into one of the boxes and it works fine as intended - as a little rechargeable 5v power source.

Plenty of space for an esp-01
