Did You connect ground (GND) from power to arduino?

Hey Pawel - thanks for the suggestion. I connected the two grounds and then it started working. It was such a relief. Thanks.
Strange that with the ground not connected it spits out garbage characters

There is a link to many screenshots and diagrams etc

If you use a pro mini on 3.3v, than you don't have to levelshift. Power the promini and esp seperately.
