Is there a list of known ESP8266 firmware versions and libraries? Is there a NON software serial library?

Was that a dumb question or are there no lists? I've read many little internet articles or blogs on the esp8266 where they use a command set that looks different than mine, so it makes me wonder what firmware they're using. And what library?
