I used the same USB<->serial converter and add a pull*down* resistore (10k) to the pc-tx-line (rx from esp8266). Now it seems to work, I'll try another USB<->serial converter as soon as I get one...

The first thing I did was to make sure the file programmers.txt (C:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino\hardware\esp8266com\esp8266\programmers.txt) contains

esptool.communication=serial
esptool.protocol=esp
esptool.program.protocol=esp
esptool.program.tool=esptool
esptool.program.extra_params=


Which I got from an earlier release

next platform.txt in the same directory needs an extra line at the end:

Don't forget in AtmelStudio to press Tools->Visual Micro->Reload Toolchains
