Another suggestion: why not change the power supply to 5v output (instead of 3.3v) and add a "wall usb charger"

I thought of this, but I will need to add 3.3v regulator in that case & will need advanced front face to be able to mount the usb connector.

I think you need to tweak your board-work to accommodate this.

Can't agree more, I will modify my next board and add a fuse for safety.
