It'd be interesting to benchmark and test the module to see how it handles full throttle data at say, 921600 baud. Know if it supports software flow control?

Peeled the cover off and discovered a Mediatek chip, and a hand soldered board. Here's a pic. Has anyone made a performance / feature comparison between the two technologies? Seems like the design between the two at the high level is very similar; high integration, off board flash for code bootup.

MT7681 costs around $5 compared to the sub $2 cost of the ESP8266. Choice of chip depends on what peripherals you need. There is also the TI CC3200 at $8.

I don't know about that since on taobao the 7681 modules are pretty comparably priced to the 8266.
