I don't know anything about DMX or artnet. What does this project do?

The esp device seems to plug into the back of a stage light. So the esp receives over wifi ("artnet protocol"?) and then drives the attached light with some sort of RS422/485 protocol ("DMX protocol"?)

Thanks in advance,
John

#22179 Hi John,

DMX protocol is used in industrial staging light dimmers since the 198x. It was replacing old analog 0-10V controlled dimmers where there were one wire per channel, so quite horrible when big shows or theaters have more than 200 channels.

Yes, it is a RS485 signal, driven at 250kbaud, and as I said, the stream has a break to identify the start, a 0x00 start code followed by 512 8bits values corresponding to light levels of each dimmers.

#22380 Theatrical lighting (therefore DMX also) is a real-time requirement where any signal delay would be intolerable... i dunno if you'd want to entrust it to wifi and a $5 transmitter :o

Also, your stage show would then be susceptible to DDoS attacks or RF jamming. :ugeek:

(ok, this is actually pretty cool)
