Or, connect a capacitor (at least 220 uf) across the Vcc and gnd of the 3.3 volts coming from the ftdi. This worked wonders for me.

Is that diagram applicable to all boards? I use the esp-01 and esp-201. (yeah I know about the esp-201 problems) I keep finding terrible wiring diagrams all over the place. The most absolute safe/stable is what I'm looking for.

This schematic looks right ! PullUps and PullDown on proper pins are there.
I don't know much about ESP-201, but its wiring should be pretty equivalent.
