I don't know about that since on Taobao the 7681 modules are pretty comparably priced to the 8266.

No, on Taobao, the MT7681 modules are priced from 19.90 RMB up to 60.00 RMB for the HLK-M30, with an average around 30.00 RMB, whereas the ESP8266 modules can be found at 13.50 RMB:

ESP8266 average price is around 14.50 RMB

Be careful that some shops are actually selling the SDK for a few RMBs, but this is not the module itself!

So the price difference between the MT7681 and the ESP8266 is also visible on Taobao, and is in the ratio that Jon said.

Hello - been completely absorbed by all of the information here. Simply stunned by the integrated nature of this chipset. Hope this community can make it truly hacker friendly!

Before discovering the esp8266 and this forum, I had ordered the Hi-Link HLK-RM30 wifi module: http://www.hlktech.net/product_detail.php?ProId=50

It suspiciously looks like one of the SMT esp8266 modules. I will take one of my samples and remove the shield and take photos.

hi, do you investigate on the AT commands set ? is it working as expected ? stable ?
is there any hardware handshake RTS/CTS available ?
