@jonsmirl - i2c takes 2 pins, as You see with ESP-05 no free pins (in this case TX & RX works as SDA & SCL)

u say tx rx work sda scl. is it same for esp-01? is it mean tx is sda rx is scl for esp-01?

On a module exposing all of the pins, would there be free GPIO?

all of the pins - 2 = ?
I don't know all available modules

sda/scl pins are defined in include/driver/i2c.h
