If I remember correctly I just used another adapter... (ordered 10 of them)
I think what helps when using those adapter board is to start adding half a millimetre of solder paste on each pad before starting to solder the ESP module, so that the module is just above the PCB adapter board.
I'm not sure because I've used custom PCB without problem since and ESP201 for debug/development.
