No, I didn't try it out and do any consumption measurement.
But I look at the code, but from version I've merge recentyl, it does actually call the Espressif SDK.
Oh ! on Github, I see actually that there is a newer version. I will check this "_mode()" new function.
EDIT: Ok ! I saw you second post with Git issue #644. Then, maybe it is a bug on Espressif side.

Thanks Buddy, would be great to have an actual way of shutting off RF completely and using the CPU with high current over heads. Would be great if Espressif could get this simple basic function in place and operative.
