ESP8266 model 1, 512, connected to a serial monitor, output was partially garbage, just readable intermittently, after further investigation, turned out that patch cables (a few in series) to the 3.3V power supply were the culprit. After shortening the cables (cleaned up the spider web type patch board system) everything worked fine.
