Spark fun has good 4 signal level shifters about 2-3$ which is basically 4 of martins circuits...
I've had bad luck with FT232RL usb converters , mine are just flaky.....
only 2 of 10 would FW load..

The FT232R works perfectly for me.
Why would the data from the SH7055 come through without a problem when connected to the 5V FT232R but not work through the level shifter.

I guess the thing I don't understand is why one of these works and the other does not.
SH7055 (5v) --> Level shifter --> ESP8266 (Does not work)
SH7055 (5v) --> Teensy 3.1 ---> ESP8266 (Works perfectly)
The Teensy has no problem receiving the serial from the SH7055 but the level shifter does have a problem.
I even tried having both HV and LV on the level shifter connected to 3.3v, this also did not work
