Use a 5V supply, that will lessen the heat, what else are are driving?? A ESP at 50mA average at most....
9V-3.3V=5.7V*50mA = 0.25W yep warm
5V-3.3V=1.7V*50mA = 0.085W yep must nicer!
Next time you can use a switching supply, you can get them predone in china for $1
