I'd only use a regulator on the bench, so a few milliamps is not an issues but for actual operation as a standalone I'd switch to battery every time...
Looks like an LFP (lithium ferrophosphate) battery is the best option as it can be charge at 3.6 volts so the ESP should be fine, otherwise we need some very low current regulation... LiPo can supply current as you need it (surge) but not sure what charge voltages can be used... if fully charged the battery voltage exceeds 3.6 were back to regulation...
I'm guessing a lot of people will need answers to powering the ESP8266 if they want long life from a battery...
