#44787 So - If I format with 4M setting - it goes away for ages (blue flashing light on ESP12 as it programs) and comes back with a yellow exclamation mark in a box, no text, no explanation, just a box.... then something about waiting 30 seconds.. why?? Wait 2 more minutes before flashing device. Why?

If I set it to 1 meg and format.. same - exclamation mark...

Firmware flash at 1 meg setting (after format)... same again - blue flashing light for a while as it programs... then exclamation - and lots of dots in a popup box...

So clearly something is going wrong at the format/flashing stage.

I had the same problem as you and It was fixed doing the format

#44790 What kind of model you have ?
I have ESP-01 with 1M and ESP-12E with 4 M and all works without problem.
I don't know exactly the procedure using the MMISCOOL tool as I program them directly from the arduino envirnoment.
You should try with other kind of utilities as, maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that there are 2 different way to reset the device, the 'ck' and 'nodemcu'.

#44791 ESP-12E - bog standard 4 meg version... not using any devices or Arduino - just the ESP-12E and the software from the BASIC site - tried both stable and unstable versions - same result..... weird...

#44799 I have exactly the same modules and so far no problem.

Maybe it's your USB/serial converter or a swapping between TX and RX; don't forget the reset and GPIO0 to ground
