Yes ! although you can also add a push button to RES, and with 2 fingers you can easily enter in programming mode.

well im just trying to get this one working and then maybe ill build a little rig to put it into program mode. Im just trying to figure out if i can turn the esp into a mesh net node.

http://imgur.com/gatF8qD I did my best to get all the pins where they should go but it still wont work. I tried to test the serial terminal in the pi and it worked fine as an echo loop. But no matter what i do it wont get into boot mode. Am i missing something.

Your wiring looks a bit ugly. Long wire can lead to problems.
You also need good power supply with big capacitor nearby the ESP power pins.
