#49732 I rembered why the relay came on swapped the pull up round so that that it was pulled up to 3v but the esp8266 is still not booting seems to not be getting power, moving the esp around makes the relay go nuts turning on and off.

#49734 You means that the ESP is booting fine without the relay and that you can actually have some good debug traces on serial port ? And when relay is connected, do you see some crashes on serial ?
It seems to be a power supply issue.
Get a more robust one, and add capacitors nearby ESP.
Do you have the reverse diode in parallel with the relay's coil ?

#49735 I have now set up two boards, one is powered by a wall adapter, one is powered by 9v battery. The one with the wall adapter has a 5v regulator powering the relay which splits into a 3v reg to power the ESP, the batter one has no 5v regulator.

When powering by the wall adapter with or without the 5v regulator the power is very dim on the ESP, when powering by the battery the ESP comes on and the blue light just stays on.
