In "#43 ESP8266 Range Test with and without External Antenna" [Andreas Spiess] range tested an ESP8266 with and without external antenna to smartphone connection. I think, he came to results in a range we all would expect.

In "UDP-Ranger - a simple ESP8266 range tester" [Andreas Reischle] tested the distance using two ESP8266 and got a result between [Andreas Spiess]'s and [CNLOHR]'s results.
So there have to be significant differences in the setups or test environments.
