i made this last 2012. wifi module is from hlk-tech. cant remember though if its RM04 or M03.

(M03 most likely. 'think RM04 is still not out back then)

now, im using openwrt router boards for my ESP local server

I ordered few CHIPs for multiple IoT projects. This CHIP + ESP8266 is great combo for all lots of IoT projects.

That is really great. You have done it way back in 2012 !!!

I too initially tempted to use these OpenWRT devices. I bought and tinkdered with devices like DIR-300/DIR-600 (from DLink) and MR-3020 (from TP-Link). OpenWRT based systems are great, but issues I found are:
* You have to tinker the board for GPIO pins
* CPU power is less
* For attaching extra HDD/SDCard, you have to either solder or do some extra work
* Not readily run on a battery
* Overall system cost is crossing 10$ for central controller :)

Raspberry(pre 3.0 without WiFi/BT ) has some extra issues like SDCard,WiFi dongle, non-battery provision.

Chip solves most of the above issues. Clincher is it's 4GB Flash + Battery-Provision + WiFi + Ready to run (without any SDCard issues)

That is true.
