I've been working on these ESP01's for a couple of weeks and have had no problem with direct connect to 3V.
I've used my Uno as the programmer with breadboard running 3V from it, and have used a FTDI programmer as well. Both worked fine with no failures. As always, at your own risk!

Thank you for answering my question rather than just telling me to buy a different product!

I'll try with the direct connection to CH_PD and no connection on RST.
