Yes it is cheap as in not costing an lot of $, but not so cheap when you consider what you need to do to make use of it. Lost I/O pins, required physical connections. But why would you even need it? There is no reason to even touch the flash in order to retain the counters. RTC ram is not a part of the flash memory. It is ram. You can write to it all you want.
