The thing is that this is not a case of a hobby project, open options and etc. This is a ready, working application, on a separate MCU. All logic is already there. The only place to make some changes is to replace the wireless communication peripheral (which is Xbee) with something else (like ESP chip). Arduino and all of its software tools is not an option here for an end product.
