Thanks for the comments. I did post my code up for a few days but pulled it (for various reasons).
I didn't know that uploading code changed the actual firmware. I had to reflash the 12E as it wouldn't take code. Good to know that they are at least all running the same code and firmware.
The units are 'bare' i.e. they are not on dev boards. I will take a few photos of the units and their deepsleep current draw.
I have seen Andreas' video - I will check out the tiny timer.
