Totally new to this so I have have missed a step.
Added the Board Manager for the ESP8266 and restarted the IDE. Loaded the Blink example, tried others, and this is the output:
ctags pattern is missing
Error compiling for board Generic ESP8266 Module.
I have no idea what is wrong now
