That's the simplest and obvious choice but for some unknown reason it did not work for me, I tried several chips and various resistor values... My scope went MIA so I couldn't check for anomalies...
I've actually found several other reports of dividers not working, probably time to check this again as I am now armed with an inexpensive (but decent enough) USB scope besides, using a couple of resistors is probably the preferred solution...

I've tried the voltage divider with a 1K and a 2K resistor and the 4050 too, but neither did work for me. It's working when I'm connecting the arduino's TX directly to the RX on the ESP8266. I'm not sure if I've got the 4050 wired up correctly, but I'm pretty sure about the resistors. (:

Seems level shift is not necessary. Here is written have no problem. Anyone see a issue?
PS: I'm using TX/RX from ESP connected to Arduino and everything is fine so far.
