#8981 so just assign it a hostname on your pc or router based on ip address (/etc/hosts) or mac (/etc/ethers), assigning a hostname on the esp itself solves nothing

#8982 What happens when the ip address changes? Or are you assuming everyone will assign static ip addresses? Also what about other operating systems that don't have the luxury of assigning hostnames? iOS and Android (no root) come to mind. So it doesn't make sense when you say it won't solve anything.

ok so how is giving the esp a hostname going to fix things then? how does your pc find out that the esp has a hostname?

#8998 Could you explain how it wouldn't? Maybe I am missing something regarding how hostnames work? I thought they were broadcast to the router during the DHCP request and then clients request that hostname from the DHCP server? Am I mistaken? That could very well be the case, enlighten me.
