After a couple of prototypes and more than a few problems later, I have come up with a design which seems to work OK. It still uses a 7805CV regulator for power but my next step is to upgrade to a buck converter as Rudy and others have suggested.
It will use a
TL2575-05 voltage converter for the power supply.
I have also added a level converter on the step line as I found without it the stepper driver was missing a lot of steps. ie, the steps were there but not being recognised by the driver. This turned out to be the cause of most of my problems when switching from usb to 5v pin power and I am still unsure why.
I stumbled upon this great cloud based electronic drawing package, easyeda.com. I have had a very high success rate with finding the components I want on file first time which is way better than my experience with Fritzing and Eagle. It is hosted by a board manufacturer and is super easy to use. I guess everyone has their favourites and this is now mine.
On that note, I have attached an image of the schematic for my latest circuit and the BOM is also attached. I am hoping that someone with nothing better to do,
can cast an eye over it and pick any faults before it goes to manufacture. A BIG ask I know but I have no-one local to call on.
Thanks to Rudy and everyone else for their help.
