Actually the ESP8089 (and it's successor the ESP8266) was designed to be a simple wifi interface for cheap tablets and stuff connected to the host via sdio from where it would also receive its firmware.
This project still seems to be kinda active: https://github.com/al177/esp8089

But basically they're both the same.
Nevertheless - as the others said already - a usb thingy will de a better job.
