How do you come to that conclusion? Page 15 mentions: "Input high voltage : 3.6 V (max)".

i cant say anything but i am usig 5v and no burn no overheating,. i dont know :D i am just testing :)

#9954 If I am reading the data sheet correctly, it looks like the Winbond flash chip is rated for an absolute maximum Vdd of 3.6 + 0.6 = 4.2V.

Getting back to the question of batteries, I'd say that, without a regulator, the following combinations are probably OK:
    3 X NiCd or NiMH
    2 X NiZn
    1 X Li-ion

...but anything higher in voltage like 3 X alkaline is probably not safe.
