For me, my example c) is working as expected.
In general you can't expect battery life like in usual "weather stations", wifi is much more complex and resource demanding than simple 433MHz serial radio, on the other hand it is much more versatile.
For simply transmitting a measured value to a base station, ESP + wifi is unoeconomical and technical overkill. OTOH the chip is powerfull and cheap and combined witch cheap 433MHz radio (wifi disabled) could still be an option.

Also not sure if you saw my question about the multimeter.
Need to find someway to extend the battery as the next devices I am planning on keeping the sensors awake and waking up the esp on detection.
As I wrote for my case c): it is doing more than your dht and running for over a month now w/o remarkable discharge of the LiIon battery.
